With the America realization thing, I think it's mostly what you said: he figured out that they were the same thing, and though he didn't understand right off the bad what that was, he figured out that it had something to do with the others like him. Plus he seemed super calm after this epiphany so he was probably like "YAYYYYY I'M NOT A FREAK."
