Historians have probably all given up over how hilariously biased and inaccurate all the countries stories are. "So, Mr Denmark, tell me about the Dano-Swedish Wars!" "Well, Sweden was being a lamer..."
I think that the emotional connection is probably pretty -- subtle? IDK. I don't see it as anything too blatant, more of a... empathy, or something. Denmark is healthy because he has great health care for his people, he's happy because his people are, he went into a national depression when his people did (the FUCK, OUR LIVES SUCK kind of depression, not the money kind). ETC. And then a person who meets him would... maybe not feel happy, or calm, but yeah some sort of "hm, I know this person." And then the more nationalist they were -- Ahahaha, I remember Norway said IC that sometimes women would come onto him because they were nationalists. Like that? The more you love your country, the more you... love that guy over there.
Going back to that one taken down strip, though, the one guy seemed really WAIT, WHAT IS THAT about France, and there's also the implication that France stood out enough that he knew he was different, and he told his grandfather who immediately recognized him from way back when. But the other soldiers were like "uh-huh, whatever..." So I don't think that it's super widespread knowledge that country people exist, although yeah, I think it's probably a "oh, that... kind of makes sense..." sort of deal, once people find out.
