Northern Lights! Bar and Restaurant!
Northern Lights:
Location Bonito Drive
Hours 1-2 PM ish to 12-4 AM ish
Brief History
The Northern Lights was re-opened in fall 2008 as a bar. Jenny Romano ran it, with Shinjiro, Jackie, Kadaj, and a few others helping. The group pillaged the city for all the alcohol left in it. This kept them going for a few months. However, tragedy struck. A fire raged through the 'Lights. The blaze itself and the rescue attempts left the place a wreck.
Though Jenny decided never to go back to it, Shinjiro stubbornly decided to work and repair the place. Several months and a lot of help/repair later (including a kid with carpenter magic,) the bar was mostly restored. Shinjiro re-opened--not just as a bar, but as a restaurant as well. He was proud of the place and already thought of it as his own.
Over the next two years, the bar went through zombie invasions, acid rain, graffiti, earthquakes, nearby explosions, possession, insanity, visions, and armed attacks. Obviously it did good business. Also, it's still standing. It's taken a lot of damage in various ways, but Shinjiro is stubborn and persistent about repairing it each time.
Payment system and supplies:
The bar runs off of and depends on a trade/barter system with the customers. To purchase drinks or food, the city residents must bring something to trade. Food, clothes, tools, nicknacks, weapons, liquor, cigarettes--anything and everything. The food supplies cycle back into the restaurant and keep it running. Shinjiro supplements these with semi-regular supply runs. He keeps it as stocked as possible under the circumstances.
If someone brings 'more' supplies than a dinner or drink is worth, the person can run a tab for a few dinners/drinks. It's all recorded and written down in notebooks behind the bar.
As for the liquor--that's a 'trade secret.' Darkness beer is a created beer. It also tastes like hell in a bottle. Jackie makes it with his 'darkness powers,' the same ones responsible for Horton's water supply. The alcohol is tinted green just like the darkness water. They rarely have anything else (though Shinjiro might have a bottle or two of good stuff hidden around.)
Menu/what can be found there:
Gourmet dishes! Except, well, the supplies aren't the best. Several excellent chefsincluding Shinjiro himself do their absolute best with post apocalyptic ingredients. Creative dishes from canned foods (mashed potatoes, soups, vegetable dishes, etc.) are enhanced as best as possible with various spices. Monster meat also appears! Ghost cow steaks galore, and other things you might not want to consider. As long as it tastes good right?
The 'ethnicity' of the food is all over the place. Japanese, Western, other... Shinjiro likes trying out new things. Or, whatever they can under the circumstances.
Drinks. Darkness beer is the main liquor. Others can rarely be found and have to be requested. Otherwise, there's water and usually some type of fruit juice or punch-like thing (think kool-aid, and other powdered stuff.) Occasionally he gets a hold of coffee. He's also got a decent supply of ginger tea.
Layout
The Northern Lights has a kitchen, dining area, supply room, small basement area and restroom. Sample picture below:
This is baaasically what it looks like anyway. Thanks to Maresuke for working on it with me.
Misc bits of layout.
There is a ginormous sword on the wall, above the out-facing windows. This belonged to a slain iron giant.
The generator and heater/ac are in the supply room, in the back corner.
Shinjiro keeps a shotgun behind the bar. Yep.
The front entrance door is creaky. Very creaky.
The back entrance (from the supply room) leads to an outside storage area.
Kitchen has a working fridge, oven, sink(s), freezer, microwave.
The roof is tiled. Yes this is somehow relevant.
The tables and chairs are wooden and some are mismatched. Broken over the years, you see.
Small basement is a storage for extra liquor and important supplies, just in case.
Kitchen now sports lots of bullet holes.
Supply room door doesn't match the hinges. It's been replaced.
The bar has padlocks and locking bars at each entrance, put on when the place closes.
There's a dart board and a pool table. Former behind the bar counter, latter in dining area.
Events
Poker night is run by Jon every Thursday evening, unless otherwise noted.
Parties of all kinds can and have been held there. Not so much lately, but there were concerts, birthday celebrations, etc etc.
Go play pool and darts, damn 8|
