Discedo's Spring Watanagashi 2010
What: Spring Watanagashi (Cotton Drifting) Festival
When: June 19th, late afternoon to evening
Where: Bonito Drive, then to the nearby lake to the west for cotton drifting.
After talking with Yuuko-mun, we've decided to merge the Spring Festival and the Watanagashi together! As of now, this HUGE organization post only contains information on Rika's Watanagashi plans. I will be editing this and adding more information as more volunteers come in.
This obviously won't be like your traditional Japanese festival! Especially since this is taking place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. I'm also making sure their preparations and the things they find make sense for this kind of setting. |D
About the "Watanagashi" ("cotton drifting") -
The Cotton Drifting Festival is a festival that only exists in the Higurashi series, celebrated in the Hinamizawa Village. The purpose of it is to pay respect to the futons (or... the cotton, which absorbs the evil energy during the winter) and give thanks to the Shrine God, Oyashiro.
Also, the wata in watanagashi can not only mean "cotton", but it also means entrails. For characters who know Japanese and actually want to bother looking deep into the name of it, feel free to point that out. The festival originally involved dissecting humans and ripping out their intestines until the early Showa era.
Oyashiro is Hanyuu, and the reincarnation (and shrine maiden/priestess) of that God is Rika. No one in Discedo knows this except for themselves.
About the "Hanami" ("flower viewing") - This is the Spring part of the festival. It's an actual traditional Japanese custom of enjoying the beauty of flowers. Hanami mostly involves having an outdoor party beneath the cherry blossom trees during the daytime or at night.
BEFORE THE FESTIVAL: Preparation
(I would imagine Hanyuu and Rika be giving their help for each and every thing on this list. Also, if you do not have the time, it is absolutely fine to assume your character has been helping out before the festival.)
Building/setting up the booths/a small stage (Rika's dance and music-related things) - Gracia, Tetsunosuke, Alpha, Donatello, Tir
Decorations (hanging, making them, festival masks) - Tails, Limone, Souji Seta, Kanji, Gyatso will also be helping with the decorations and possibly turning it into a class project.
For decorations, they'd most likely want to hang red and white curtains and make lanterns made from paper and wire with bulbs inside to light them up. I was wondering about electricity, but they're on Bonito Drive where there's buildings with electricity (the restaurants). So, I'm guessing they can borrow electricity from them, lol. This will be one of the few times that Discedo looks really pretty! \o\
Pre-Festival Drinking Parties
FFFFF, if anyone wants... before the actual festival, we can put up comment logs for a drinking party or something. \o/
FROM AFTERNOON UNTIL EVENING: During the Festival
Game Stalls, Activities:
Throwing Rocks at the Targets run by Amy Rose, Chen
(Substitute for the cork shooting game) Throw rocks at the toy and try to tip it over to win it. Limited number of tries.
Ring Throwing Game run by Atoli, Noble Heart
Put a ring around a toy and win it.
Lottery run by Tir, Gracia
Pick a piece of paper from out of a box. You get a toy according to the number on the paper.
Yo-Yo Tsuri run by Yuuto
(See here for information.) Small balloons filled with 1/10 of water set afloat in a tub of water. There's an elastic band and paper clip attached to the end of the water balloons. To play, players fish for the balloons by trying to a hook onto its string with a twisted line of paper. The twisted line of paper will break if it gets too wet.
You can keep the water balloon after you win it and bounce it up and down like a yo-yo with a rubber band.
Bouncy Ball and Fish Scooping Game run by Moa
(Originally a Goldfish scooping game. Colorful bouncy balls and small Angelfish from Meryl are being substituted for the goldfish.) The objective is to scoop up the rubber balls or fish with a poi from a small pool. of water. A poi is a scooper with a handle and a round frame containing paper. The paper can break easily, so try not to move it too fast in the water!
Open Mic Karaoke
When the bands aren't playing, there will be a karaoke microphone on the mini-stage built on Bonito Drive. Feel free to step on up and sing a song.
Caricature Drawing
Get your a caricature portrait drawn by Namine!
Prizes from Games:
Various different toys and dolls that were found around Discedo. We'll leave it up to your imagination on what kind of toys they are and what they look like. They have been cleaned as much as possible and patched or sewn up. And no, they aren't stitched together badly. It's canon that Hanyuu and Rika are great at sewing, so. |Db
The newer and nicer-looking toys will be made by Kanji and are probably harder to win.
Other Goodies - Festival masks! Probably made from cardboard and string instead of plastic.
Food Stalls:
So far, the people that expressed interest in cooking food/serving food for the festival are:
Minagawa Hifumi
Souji Seta
Yuri Lowell
Alpha Hatsuseno
Jonathan Carnahan
Eirin
Fay
Hanyuu
Gyatso
Canada
And since it is held on Bonito Avenue, the festival is pretty much outside of the Northern Lights and Cafe Alpha. The High School isn't too far away either!
Rika also nabbed some wizard cookies from Eald'narche and bacon from Sai. So, cooks are free to have these at their stall to hand out as well!
There will also be beer and wine. ♥
Manning the Stalls:
So far it's just Gracia, Yuuto, Subaru, Noble Heart, Atoli, Amy Rose, and Chen for the game booths and the cooks are most likely going to be watching over their own stalls (refer to the above).
I think we have enough characters manning stalls now, so it would be safe to assume that other characters are taking over for others when players want to allow their characters to walk around other parts of the festival. Of course, if there's anyone else left that wants to volunteer, please let me know.
Security:
Hitsugaya Toushirou, Slowking, Leonardo, and Raphael will be keeping a look out. Shinjiro will possibly be standing around outside to keep an eye out too. Who else wants to keep an eye out for any troublemakers?
Music:
(UPDATE: I added a small stage to be built on Bonito Drive. \o)
Alpha will be playing her gekkin for the Flower Viewing and Cotton Drifting.
Bands: Nittle Grasper (Ryuichi, Tohma, Noriko) and Bad Luck (Shuichi, Suguru).
BEFORE NIGHTFALL: Flower Viewing
This will be taking place some time before nightfall when there's enough daylight out. Hanami is a custom of enjoying the beauty of flowers. It consists of having a party under the cherry blossom trees.
END OF THE EVENING: Cotton Drifting
By the end of the evening, Rika will do a ritual dance in her shrine maiden outfit and hack open a mattress (with the springs removed) and pillows to tear out the cotton. She and Hanyuu will bring the cotton to the lake and pass out cotton balls to everyone to put afloat on the water. This marks the end of the festival and everyone can start cleaning up and going home.
AFTER THE FESTIVAL: Oyashiro's Curse
In the Higurashi series, Oyashiro's "curse" has been befalling people for four years straight. If you don't count Rika's "good end" in the series, it happens five years straight on the night of the Watanagashi. What happens is: one person is killed and the other person is "demoned away" or goes missing.
...no. We won't be having the real curse happening in Discedo. But there will be murders that will coincidentally fall on festival night (and will freak Rika out very much). Please refer to Riful's post for more details, villains and victims.
POSTING
There will be an open actionspam/commentlog post in the
discedo_logs community. This will be arranged in a similar way that the ghost catching plot and and Green's Death posts were organized. Please refer to their posts as an example. Both prose-style and action replies are allowed. Whatever you're most comfortable with.
Please do not make your own thread, but tag underneath the topics we'll be making. The festival post will be split into different topics (similar to how everything is listed above):
FROM AFTERNOON UNTIL EVENING: During the Festival
Games, food stalls, and other activities can be tagged under here. If you're running a stall or activity, it may make things more organized to label what kind of stall they're running in the subject line! Some activity threads may go up later because we're all from different timezones.
Having your character just standing, walking around, patrolling, snacking, simply hanging out, doing whatever they want can also be tagged under here! Mingle! Threadjack! Make new CR!
Following after that will be BEFORE NIGHTFALL: Flower Viewing, END OF THE EVENING: Cotton Drifting
And lastly AFTER HOURS: CLEAN UP. When everyone starts going back to their apartments, we're going to have to clean up, right? The evening threads are probably going to be posted a little later after the first two threads.
This is an event that's taking place in a day, so it might be a little difficult... but backtagging is definitely welcome. Also, you do not need to know Hanyuu, Rika, and Yuuko to be able to participate. Everyone is invited! While we do need volunteers, we also need people who want to go to the festival and have fun. :3

was conned intooffered to help with the game stalls and Subaru was going to help with the set up. Also, Japan was going to help with the invitations, so I suppose he should be handing out fliers, too. And Haruka is Yuuko's substitute Watanuki and will do whatever isorderednicely asked. We're also going to need some flower-viewing tiemz, since Yuuko's Spring festival was originally based on hanami. :o
Aaaaand before the muse kills me: DRINKING PARTY, DO WANT.

When/where do you want to squeeze in the flower-viewing tiemz?
Omg this post is so much to look at and I hope this does not turn out to be a disaster.

I might do away with the Karaoke Booth if no one wants to volunteer their character to do it. But that's okay, since they might be having a mini music stage anyway.
I'll sign Ryuichi up for now. :3 Does Ryuichi plan on posting sometime so she can recruit him or do you want to assume he already volunteered? Some of the people's names up here are just assumed to make things easier. \o

UPDATE: Game and Food Stalls
Food - Please remember supplies in Discedo are limited. Depending on how much ingredients they have, vendors may want to try to avoid giving out seconds. But, that's totally up to your characters on how they want to distribute food. They can run out of supplies quickly if you want.
Games - Originally, you have to give yen to play games. Since currency doesn't really exist in Discedo and there's likely a limited amount of prizes (you don't want the same person hogging all the prizes now, do you?), people running games may want to give each person a limited amount of tries at a game. Again, this is up to how your character wants to run their stall!
One more thing...
TO THOSE WHO VOLUNTEERED TO RUN THE GAMES
...I need to know specifically which game they want to run. Amy Rose has picked the Targets game. |D; Depending on how many people there are, some booths can be joint-run.
There maaaaay be one more game to be added. But we're still waiting to see if the Scientist Request will be approved.
